Karen Reid

Oxford, MA

Art making is an intuitive process for me. I begin with a concept but typically there is no plan for the end result. I immediately get an idea down on canvas to satisfy an impulse or emotion. I then allow myself to dismantle the form and let the image evolve into what takes on a more sensitive, emotional and deeper meaning for myself. As I paint, I am seeking to recognize the significance of certain gestural marks, colors, and compositions. These elements can change the perspective and meaning of the painting which creates depth and curiosity.  I enjoy the questions and problem solving that comes with the improvisational process that I work in. It’s a dance between me and the canvas and my response to  the work speaking to me. Developing  and creating  harmony with these elements is an organic process that fills my imagination. My influences come from Hans Hoffman, Arthur Dove, Helen Frankenthaler, Marc Chagall and many more depending on the day
